Due to some unforseen changes in my life and in Flock itsself, I've temporarily put PocketFlock on hiatus... but that's all about to change.

Expect to see the first preview of 0.4 next week, with a new preview every week until 0.4 final.

New goals for 0.4 include tighter integration of the components, a "fix" for the blog-editor security hole (provided by and refused to be fixed by the friendly folks at Flock).

Brand new computer, brand new OS, semi-new partner.

Li has been the single-most helpfull contributer to PocketFlock since... ever really, filling in the gap while I've been out.

Sofar between the two of us we've laid plans for 0.4 and 0.5, as well as how to finally tackle our attempts at i386 linux and OSX PPC/i786 versions. Incedentally, the windows version runs just fine on i386 linux and i786 OSX when using WINE or DarWINE

The OSX port may actually be released before the linux version... probably just because I purchased a new fully-loaded 17inch MacBookPro. :)

First thing I did was install XP Pro (I'm not about to abandon the Windows version of any of my projects, plus I have a wide selection of Games that look absolutely gorgeous running in full quality in a 1680x1250 resolution)

Don't think I'm this rich man though... after an almost year-long stint of being a freelance handyman, I've finally got a steady job... I start on Saturday (In a management position even!) The computer was purchased with a student loan, and well worth every penny.

I'm moving back up north to the DC area.

-or-
Perhaps I'm just a little bit Sadist

Introducing Sadist

Sadist is a Firefox extension updater based upon the Flock'd core I developed
Rather than convert Firefox extensions to Work with Flock, Sadist updates the maxVersion tags to allow your old Firefox 1.x extensions run in Bon Echo.
Which is good if you're a developer who wants to test an extension for compatibility or your just a sicko like myself who likes to live on the edge.
Now for the disclaimers...

THIS MAY ADVERSELY AFFECT COMPATIBILITY WITH OTHER GECKO BROWSERS PLEASE ONLY USE SADIST EXTENSIONS ON BON ECHO. PLEASE NOTE THAT SADIST WILL ONLY UPDATE EXTENSIONS NOT THEMES. MAKE SURE THAT YOU DISABLE AUTOMATIC UPDATES FOR EXTENSIONS OTHERWISE THEY WILL BE OVERWRITTEN BY THE ORIGNALS.

Edit:
I updated Sadist to work with themes as well, you'll have to manually download and install, however they do appear to work... Same disclaimers apply

Earlier today, the Flock team made one more step towards the impending 0.6 release with the semi-released 0.5.9 version.

  • Pros:
    • A lot of the goodies people have been seeing in the hourlies have made their way into this and will probably be around for 0.6.
    • It's pretty damn stable for something that's not official
    • The long-promised beta is much closer to reality...
  • Cons:
    • Trust me, you're gonna want to create a new profile for this
    • Previously ported and official Flock extensions won't work right now because the min and maxVersion tags have changed
    • Nobody from Flock (to my knowledge) has informed extension developers or Geoff or myself about this change

So I've had to update Flock'd to handle the new min and maxVersion tags in the install.rdf
This won't affect users prior to 0.5.9 unless you're using one of the Really old versions with the bug that (temporarily) changed the minVersion to 1.5

This also means that I've done a few quick tweaks to the source

    New Features/Tweaks
  1. Support has been added for another install.rdf format so that extensions like Reveal work
  2. Duh I've added support for the new version numbers
  3. Old Flock extensions are no longer ignored by the software, I've changed Flock'd to update the version number so that the extension will work in the new version of Flock until the extension dev's can update

Everything should be working now (and in some ways, better than before), but it still bothers me somewhat that the Flock dev's didn't have the foresight to warn the extension and the converter dev's at least a day or so prior to this release or at least once the decision was made.

Many of you may have noticed from the Flockstars mailing list, that I've updated (read: overhauled) Flock'd

Anyways, I've done a major overhaul on pretty much every component of Flock'd and I'd appreciate any feedback/suggestions/gripes

It's still a long way from my ideal state, but I'd like to know the consensus of the Flock community (including the dev's)

New Features:

Extracts author, homepage, description from the extension (if present)

better support for improperly written install.rdf files

and detection of whether or not an extension is Flock compatible

Pending Features include:

the ability to extract the extensions icon (if present)

the ability to view extension profiles individually

and community reviews...

When they get done is another story

-Taken directly from my submission to the Flockstars mailing list.

<Burns Voice>Excellent....</Burns Voice>

Hopefully I'll be content enough to keep it this way for a while

Flock'd still isn't recieving data from the GET method, so The Flock'd Extension won't work properly any longer (it still works, but the big problem is on Flock'd's end)

My workaround involved getting the url and converting it into a variable and getting the value of $target.

I haven't bothered to get anything else yet since it only affects the niceties and not the core functionality of the program
